Why I Created Wicked Candle Making

If you’ve known me longer than five minutes, you probably know I’ve always been a maker. Back in the day, people even called me the “Native Martha,” as in Martha Stewart. We’re practically birthday twins, so I don’t think this is a coincidence.

For years, through Wachiay Friendship Centre, volunteer work with Aboriginal Head Start Preschool, and plenty of evenings with my own family and friends, I led craft nights, youth programs, and workshops that brought people together around a table.

Creating Wicked Candle Making felt less like starting something new and more like returning to my natural habitat.

I wanted to create a place where adults could play, laugh, try something new, and get out of their heads for a while. The goal isn’t to make a perfect candle. It’s to enjoy making something with your own hands and leave feeling a little lighter than when you arrived.

And the name? “Wicked” is a playful double meaning: wicked as in excellent, fun, and a little witchy, and “wick-ed” as in literally putting a wick in your candle. It captures the class perfectly.
