Have you ever been in a relationship that just feels so damn right? Not perfect, but “right”. Like in all the possible combinations of beings, you found each other in this cosmos. Where the possibilities are endless and your goals are without limit. A partnership where each are on equal footing and you listen and you learn and you grow with one another….

Have you ever looked into your lover’s eyes and felt the pain of intergenerational trauma bubbling up inside—knowing that colonization has done its very best in its attempt to destroy her culture? Where wave upon wave of disease and death and missionaries and government agents on her lands transformed a forest of totem poles into countless bonfires and museum collections. A history that involves paddling down to Washington State to bring back the sole lineage holders to Haida Gwaii in order to keep the clan alive. A thread so slender and so precious that you yearn to give it some strength….

Have you ever been with someone that will hold you when you’re vulnerable and defend you when you’re weak? A partner who will speak up for you when your voice is stifled and your stomach is in knots….

Have you ever found someone that your grandmother would be ecstatic to meet and would, without hesitation, demand that you marry under “Indian Law”? Oh, I have….

While traditional marriage ceremonies have never stopped amongst the Kwakwaka’wakw, no one has conducted a traditional kadzitła ceremony in my direct lineage since my grandparents were married…until now. In many northern communities, you have to marry from the opposite moiety. With my partner as an eagle and me as a raven through my Tlingit ancestry, we are a perfect match. Please excuse us, as we dance together through life….
