I’ve always been drawn to the way our stories move between worlds. Animals are not separate from us—they are kin. In these tellings, the boundaries between species don’t exist in the way Western thinking tries to define them.
The Haida Bear stories reflect that understanding. Bears are not just animals, but beings with their own societies, laws, and relationships. In many accounts, a woman marries into the Bear clan, crossing into their world and becoming part of it. These stories carry both intimacy and warning—about respect, protocol, and what happens when those are misunderstood.
The bear holds a sacred place in our culture, present in ceremony, crest, and story. In the story of the woman and the bear, that relationship becomes real—one that comes with responsibility, not just connection.
This piece reflects the bear not just as form, but as presence—honouring that relationship and the laws that come with it.
