Our ancestors valued time spent in other villages. They would travel great distances to attend potlatches or to set up their fishing camps alongside other tribes. It was at this time that they would solidify alliances, arrange marriages, trade, socialize and, even, gossip.
This tradition of visiting carried on into the 20th century. If my grandparents went to Victoria, Vancouver, Fort Rupert, Bella Bella or Prince Rupert, they would stop and visit people along the way. They would have tea in places like Campbell River, Nanaimo and Alert Bay to visit with families that they were related to.
Now that we have entered another millennium, this kind of visiting is slowing down. Often times, people are in too much of a rush to take the time to visit. They pass right through your town without a word or a whisper. When we do, we feel guilty and make excuses like, “I can’t miss the ferry,” while knowing that our ancestors would have said, “I’ll catch another one.”
With the advent of the internet age, we have rekindled old social networks through Facebook and Twitter. While they can be useful in reestablishing old bonds or creating new ones, a Tweet! is not the same as a visit!
"Tweet!” is a limited edition print using the giclée method of printmaking. This print was released in May of 2009 and printed by Andy Everson at the artist’s own studio in Comox B.C. A total of 166 prints bear the title “Tweet!” and are signed by Andy Everson: 150 in the primary edition bearing the numbers 1/150 through 150/150; 15 Artist’s Proofs; and 1 Printer’s Proof. The acid-free Moab Entrada 100% cotton rag paper measures 4.75x7.25 inches. Image size measures about 4x5.75 inches.
