The blankets have been sized to wear for blanketing ceremonies, so they are a perfect honoring gift. Blankets measure: 145 x 175cm
Long before contact with Europeans, our ancestors used blankets for warmth and for clothing. They often decorated them with crests or used them for currency.
FOGGY FACE: When the Hudson’s Bay company starting trading blankets on the coast, many were white. Due to this initial colour, all woolen trade blankets took on the name p̓a̲lx̲a̲lasg̲a̲m or “foggy-face” blankets amongst the Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw. Our ancestors tell stories about the constellation Orion who had a box of fog that could be tipped over to release it across the land and sea. This design represents that legend.
TREASURE BOX: Our ancestors stored their most prized possessions in decorated boxes called k̓awat̓si. Sometimes these boxes displayed the specific animal crest of their first ancestor. For trade, boxes were painted with commonly used images that were not tied to one particular tribe. Sometimes these portrayed the Chief of the Undersea and other times they represented human individuals. This design is done in that style.
CHILKAT: In my lineage we have a story about Raven desiring to obtain a prestigious name. He enlisted his friend Mink to accompany him inside a Great Whale to journey over to Haida Gwaii. Surrounded by members of the village, Raven was able to win the hand of the Princess in exchange for the remains of the whale. Raven’s son from this marriage carried the name Eda’nsa back to the people of the Tongass. This design—rendered in the “chilkat” style—illustrates that legend.
