With knowledge passed on for countless generations, an unnamed ancient northern coastal ancestor took her knowledge of weaving with spruce root and cedar bark to develop a beautiful new weaving tradition. Using a horizontal loom strung with warps of mountain goat wool, she proceeded to weave in with wefts of black, white and yellow to create decorative patterns derived from basketry. Topped with a strip of sea otter fur for the neck band and fringe along the other edges, these fine blankets were painstakingly woven for nobility.
We have come to know this tradition as “Ravenstail”—from the Tlingit Yéil koowú—or “Northern Geometric” weaving. Amongst the Haida, these robes often feature prominently in myths as magical garments. There these robes carry the name Ḵwiighaalgyaat or “Cloud Blanket”.
Over time, this tradition largely fell out of favour as chilkat weavings became more desirable and woollen trade blankets became more readily available. In fact, less than 15 of these old robes remain in museum collections today. Thankfully, this tradition has recently seen a resurgence and is thriving once again with contemporary weavers weaving these patterns into blankets, aprons, leggings, jewelry, and headbands. We lift our hands up to all the weavers who take up this ancient practice. We designed this piece to pay homage to the Cloud Blanket. May you enjoy it for years to come!
Made of 80% Wool and 20% Acrylic this limited edition blanket has only 300 total in the edition, 250 will be available to the public and only 200 total will be available through Totem Design House (we are reserving 50 of the blankets for our retailers). The beautiful gift box also has the story printed on it.
