When she moved down to Kwakwaka’wakw territory, she brought not only her weaving traditions with her but also the rights for her descendants to wear this style of garment. My grandmother used to watch her weave and was very adamant about who possessed these rights and who didn’t.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany of my Tlingit forefathers were warriors. When their family, their village, and their territory was threatened, they did not hesitate to defend them at all costs. Being the closest NFL team to my hometown, it seemed like it would be a good match. Truth be told, I think I was just as drawn to the logo on the sides of the helmets as I was to their geographic location. It was pretty evident that this logo was inspired by Northwest Coast art, but I don’t recall anyone ever speculating on its origins back then.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith interest in the team growing to record heights in recent years, Ro\u003cspan class=\"text_exposed_show\"\u003ebin Wright, former curator of Native American art at the Burke Museum started to inquire about the logo’s history. Professor Emeritus Bill Holm pulled out Robert Bruce Inveriarty’s 1950 publication “Art of the Northwest Coast Indians” and flipped to a page bearing the profile view of a Kwakwaka’wakw transformation mask. On seeing this, it was readily apparent that the mask inspired the creation of the logo.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"text_exposed_show\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSeeing this on Facebook got me very excited. I thought back to all those times looking at the logo—drawn to it. The fact that an object from our culture most definitely formed the basis of the original logo made me almost feel proud. It also brought up a lot of questions, too. Questions around appropriation and territorial recognition. Like our brothers and sisters to the south, I thought it was important to go a step further and create my own renditions: ones created by a Kwakwaka’wakw-Salish artist and inspired by a Kwakwaka’wakw mask on southern Salish lands.\u2028\u2028\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Burke Museum ultimately found out where the mask ended up and was able to make arrangements to borrow it for a short period of time. During the unveiling, I was asked to come down and speak on its behalf. Instead of just speaking on the mask, I thought it was integral that we sing and dance for it to let it “hear” our songs once again. So we did. In all likelihood, I was the first Kwakwaka’wakw to dance around the Vince Lombardi trophy…. My grandfather went to residential school and was punished for speaking his language. He later came back to K’omoks and raised my mom surrounded and immersed in the Kwakwala language. They were the very epitome of resilience.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI then think about their parents, grandparents and great grandparents alike. They watched as settlers slowly moved into their territories and gained control over their lands in the name of a never-seen foreign king or long-reigning queen. They saw their friends and family quickly suffer and disappear from introduced disease. They went to war with other tribes as greed from the new economy invariably spread as rapidly as any epidemic. Though our numbers dwindled to a mere 5% of our original population, we continued on because of my ancestors’ resilience.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eToday, our culture is a well-worn, battered set of armour that surrounds and protects us. It shows the marks from all of the preceding generations. Dented and scarred, it stands as a testament to the old peoples' resilience. Our culture is a gift from our ancestors. It has withstood suffering, death, attack, malice, racism and attempted genocide and, yet, it still guides us to this day. Using a horizontal loom strung with warps of mountain goat wool, she proceeded to weave in with wefts of black, white and yellow to create decorative patterns derived from basketry. Topped with a strip of sea otter fur for the neck band and fringe along the other edges, these fine blankets were painstakingly woven for nobility. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have come to know this tradition as “Ravenstail”—from the Tlingit Yéil koowú—or “Northern Geometric” weaving. Amongst the Haida, these robes often feature prominently in myths as magical garments. There these robes carry the name Ḵwiighaalgyaat or “Cloud Blanket”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver time, this tradition largely fell out of favour as chilkat weavings became more desirable and woollen trade blankets became more readily available. In fact, less than 15 of these old robes remain in museum collections today. Thankfully, this tradition has recently seen a resurgence and is thriving once again with contemporary weavers weaving these patterns into blankets, aprons, leggings, jewelry, and headbands. We lift our hands up to all the weavers who take up this ancient practice. We designed this piece to pay homage to the Cloud Blanket.
